Landing Gear ServiSeals™
Landing Gear ServiSeals™
ServiSeals™
During the past 15 years, one of the biggest maintenance problems we
have faced has been leaking main and nose landing gear strut seals.
The landing gear struts have a hard life. These parts are exposed to
all types of weather during both cold and hot times of the year as well
as operation at low and high altitudes. Proper operation of the struts
require them to be properly serviced with both air and oil to cushion
the airframe from landing loads and properly support the aircraft during
taxi. The air and oil are contained within the moving parts of the struts
by seals.
The original seals were O-rings, which had the tendency to twist during movement of the lower strut within the upper housing. The twisting allowed the air or oil to seep past the O-rings and eventually a "soft" or low strut developed, with an oily mess on the tire and possible damage to the landing gear system!
After three years of development and testing, we have the answer to the leaking struts. Our STC’d ServiSeal™ kits replace the normal O-ring with a seal shaped in a "T" cross section rather than round. In addition, two Teflon backup rings are inserted next the "T" section. This combination resists twisting and as a result, maintains a leak resistant sealing surface for the strut assembly. The ServiSeal™ Kits are standard equipment in all Twin Commander Grand Renaissance Commander aircraft.
